The last few years have seen an explosion of information about self-care for caregivers—THANK GOODNESS!!!
One of the best sources has been Susanne White, creator of the Caregiver Warrior community. Susanne’s book, titled … to the point … Self-Care for Caregivers, is a great collection of tips, blogs, suggestions, and commands for taking care of yourself. I highly recommend it.
One of her more interesting thoughts is about what we wear.
She says there’s “nothing wrong with sweatpants, yoga outfits, slippers, and comfy t-shirts.”
But, she points out that, so often, our mood is impacted by what we wear and dressing up, even a little, can positively affect how we feel. “Looking your best,“ she says, “Boosts your self-worth and can make you feel empowered to take on the day.”
She doesn’t say you have to dress-to-the-nines every day, but that “Dressing up (every now and then) affects the way you feel, act, and think and can even help you face the day with a more positive attitude.”
It cracked me up when she said, “Instead of casual Friday, have a ‘look-like-a-million-bucks Friday.’”
So, whataya been decked out in during most of your caregiving hours? You’re smart—you know that who you see in the mirror impacts who you are and what you do. Pump it up a little and see how it makes you feel.
